    Pavel Landovský

    Pavel Landovský

A beloved actor and playwright widely known as Lanďák. He was cast in films by all the most prominent directors of his era, including Jiří Menzel, Jiří Krejčík, Pavel Juráček, Miloš Forman, and Jan Svěrák. He originally graduated from a mechanical engineering high school and made several unsuccessful attempts to be admitted to DAMU (The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts). He began his career in regional theatres in Teplice, Šumperk, Klatovy, and Pardubice. In 1966, he joined Prague’s Činoherní klub, where he spent eleven years co-shaping its most famous era (with productions like The Government Inspector and Uncle Vanya). In 1977, he signed Charter 77 and went on to perform mainly in Vlasta Chramostová's underground Apartment Theatre, notably playing the title role in Play Macbeth, before being forced to emigrate to Austria. After returning to the Czech Republic, he performed between 1990 and 2008 at Divadlo Na zábradlí, the National Theatre, Divadlo v Dlouhé, and Divadlo Hybernia. Audiences remember him vividly as the unforgettable brewmaster in Václav Havel's play Audience. His most famous film credits include Closely Watched Trains (Ostře sledované vlaky), Marketa Lazarová, and Adelheid. He is also immensely popular for his portrayal of Major Terazky in the screen adaptation of Miloslav Švandrlík's Black Barons (Černí baroni).
