Pavel Dominik

Pavel Dominik is one of the most highly regarded Czech translators from English. He was born in 1952 in Ostrava and studied English language and literature at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. He has been a freelance translator since the 1980s. In literature, he is best known for his excellent translations of works by Vladimir Nabokov (Lolita, Ada or Ardor) and Salman Rushdie, but he has also translated authors such as Graham Greene and Philip Roth. At the same time, his texts fundamentally shape contemporary Czech theatre. He has translated dozens of successful plays for stages such as the National Theatre, Činoherní klub, Divadlo Ungelt (A Steady Rain), and the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre (The Full Monty, The Importance of Being Earnest). His most frequently performed translations include Black Comedy and Glorious!. For his mastery, he received the prestigious Josef Jungmann Award as well as the State Award for Translation.
