Zdeněk Vančura

Zdeněk Vančura was a Czech translator and passionate lover of theatre who could transform English humour and French elegance into perfectly flowing Czech. He was the first professor of American literature in Czechoslovakia, a professor at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, and a long-time member of the Institute of Czech and World Literature. He translated for theatres across the entire country, and his texts were — and still are — heard in venues such as the Činoherní klub, the Prague City Theatres, Divadlo v Dlouhé, the South Bohemian Theatre and many other professional stages.
