Alfred Jarry
Alfred Jarry was a French poet, novelist, and playwright whose work laid the foundations for the Theatre of the Absurd and Surrealism. He secured his place in the history of world drama primarily as the author of the provocative grotesque Ubu Roi (King Ubu).
Jarry’s life and work were rooted in a radical rebellion against bourgeois morality and traditional theatrical forms. He created his most famous character—the cruel and narrow-minded Pa Ubu—during his secondary school years as a parody of his physics professor. Jarry was also the founder of 'pataphysics (the science of imaginary solutions), which profoundly influenced modern literature and philosophy. His work has become a symbol of political satire and a timeless testimony to the mechanisms of power.
